Springfield, MA—Junior Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) leads a group of seven Rhode Island College wrestlers still in contention for All-New England honors after day one of the 2010 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships, hosted by Western New England College.
The Anchormen currently sit in seventh place out of the 14-team field with 56.5 points. Williams (81.5), Wesleyan (74.0), Johnson & Wales (72.5), Springfield (70.5), Southern Maine (64.5) and Bridgewater State (63.5) are ahead of Rhode Island College.
Sutherland is the only RIC grappler yet to lose, posting a 3-0 record. He will face John Marsh from Bridgewater State, who is also unbeaten at the tourney tomorrow. Sutherland is 0-2 vs. Marsh this season.
Sophomores Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) and Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ), as well as, senior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA), are each 2-1 at 125, 141 and 174 lbs., respectively.
Junior Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) is 1-1 at 133 lbs., while senior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) is 1-1 at 184 lbs. Freshman Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) is 3-1 at 285 lbs.
Sophomore Scott Legacy (Bennington, VT), junior Brendan Guarino (Lodi, NJ) and sophomore Steve Saba (Methuen, MA) have been eliminated at 157, 165 and 197 lbs., respectively.
